The first Dr.Rama Saharia Memorial Award instituted by the MBKM Foundation in her memory went off to a gala start this weekend at the NEA Seminar Hall in NOIDA.

As speaker after speaker spoke fondly of Dr.Rama, a renowned educationist, writer and humanist who spent a major part of her life championing the cause of women empowerment, it was evident that she had made a huge impact not only among her family and friends but everywhere.

The inaugural Dr. Rama Saharia Memorial Awards, presented by the MBKM Foundation, celebrated six exceptional women in higher education, creative arts and  skills, social work and media.

The event featured touching speeches, engaging stories, and surprise addresses from distinguished guests, including Dr. Yogendra Narayan and Mr Sunil Shastri.

Dr Narayan shared inspiring anecdotes of India's progress, whileMr  Shastri captivated the audience with stories of his late father, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and mother, Lalita Shastri. The event highlighted the achievements of the awardees and paid tribute to Dr. Rama Saharia's legacy in empowering women.

The program aimed to encourage women who had excelled in their vocations, especially as teachers, artists, social workers and media. Getting the right candidates at such short notice was a challenge but a Jury constituting eminent personalities from various areas finally zoomed in on the six awardees.

1. Shrishti Prabha Lal (creative and fine arts)

2.Aliya Abbas (Media)

3. Shivani Sharma (Yoga and health care)

4.Aparna (social work)

5. Indu Rani Singh (NGO Administration)

6. Dr. Anu Mishra (Teaching)

As the awards were handed over to the winners each awardee got a chance to hold the mike(normally not available in crowded award functions) to talk about themselves and their passion.

Some appeared nervous, but an encouraging anchor CK Srivastava egged them on and then there was no holding back. The audiences loved their stories and wholeheartedly applauded their efforts and their struggles to stay afloat despite the heavy odds they faced in their endeavours.

However, the best was reserved for the end. What came as a total surprise was the address by the two veterans who were there as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour after one thought the program was over. Dr. Yogendra Narayan, a senior bureaucrat who handled various portfolios including the prestigious positions of chief secretary of the country’s biggest state of U.P. and the  Defence Secretary in the Union Government  in his long tenure, kept the audience riveted by his anecdotes of service and how India had moved ahead in all spheres of life in its 76 years of independence.

But it was Mr Sunil Shastri, veteran politician and son of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who stole the show. Although he said he was very tired after his two-hour road journey from Gurgaon, once he started talking about his father the illustrious Lal Bahadur Shastri and his equally well-known mother Lalita Shastri the audience was lost in nostalgia lapping up each word, especially the youngsters who had only read about them or seen them in films.

He went on in his humorous style, telling the gathering that since they had handed the mike to a politician he was not going to let go so easily.

The simple and honest politician that he has been, in his humorous vein he went on to tell Prof.Pradeep Mathur, the Chairman of the MBKM Foundation, to reserve an award for him in their program next year, sending the audience roaring in laughter.
