The past year 2023 has been surprisingly very good for Indian cinema.

The audiences have gone to the theatres to watch all genres of cinema.

The main credit for this has to go to Shahrukh Khan who have three big(more than 100 crore)hits including Jawan. Pathan and now . Salman Khan added to the lure of cinema by giving Tiger 3 which also had Shahrukh in a cameo role.

Then there was Dunki which is on the way to become a reality based on the journey of migrants from India trying to enter Canada and ultimately USA.

The biggest box office hit of the year reaching nearly 900 crores worldwide has been 'Animal' starring Ranbir Kapoor with two heroines.

The film has unprecedented violence and misogyny as far as Bollywood is concerned.

And as Javed Akhtar recently pointed out it was a shame on Indian culture that the hero asks his girl friend to lick his shoes to prove her love.

The producers of the film hit back by saying that Love is not gender based.

"If the heroine had asked the hero to do that it would be hailed as woman empowerment" they stated.

However the surprise of the year has been what is called a Sleeper film (made on very small budget but goes on to become a hit by word of mouth) Twelfth Fail.

It's based on a real life story of an IPS officer who came from a village to join a coaching centre and finally crack the IPS. It's also a love story between the hero and his girl friend who also becomes an IRS.

Starring a very small time hero Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, 12th Fail is on top of the list of top 250 Indian films on IMDB with a rating of 9.2 out of 10.

The other four films in the list are five Indian movies of all time including the 1993 Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Gol Maal and Madhavan’s Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.

What comes as a pleasant surprise is that 12th Fail beats Hollywood biggies like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (rated 8.6), Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (8.4), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (7.9), Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (7.8), John Wick: Chapter 4 (7.7) and Gret Gerwig’s Barbie (6.9) headlined by Margot Robbie.

It is based on the life of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme poverty to become an Indian Police Service officer. The film has collected more than Rs 67 crore worldwide and  garnered more attention and admiration after it started streaming on OTT.
