AI-generated content may be incorrect.Hailed as the fourth pillar of democracy, the media is no doubt a good institution. After the revolutionary changes in information technology in the past four decades media has come to touch almost everybody in all walks of life. Media influences minds can mould our attitudes and behaviour, and are, therefore, very crucial.

A    good and healthy media with a positive and socially beneficial orientation can certainly contribute towards creating a good society. Efforts for developing a healthy media committed to the social good of the masses are, therefore, necessary. Unfortunately, very little is being done in this regard. The media has become a plaything of vested interests of politics, big business and sectarian forces. This has led to the loss of objectivity and critical analysis, something casts strong doubts on its credibility. This is a matter of deep concern for all those who love media as an institution and understand its value in our democratic way of life.

Like any other organisation media too has two aspects – organisational structure and human resources. Both need equal attention. Through its media wing, the spiritual organisation of Brahma Kumaris (BK) is making efforts to improve the personality and character of those who are engaged in the profession of media. It I good that the BK organisation is making efforts in this direction instead of just using media for PR and self-promotion, which most other social, political and cultural organisations do.

The personality development of media persons is a task which has two aspects. In any profession, skills and knowledge of a professional worker improve their personality and work culture. The other can be the development of human qualities in a professional.  These qualities consist of factors like truthfulness, intellectual honesty, absence of greed of any kind. The inculcation of these human qualities in our personality leads us onto the road of spiritualism.

The article suggests that BK should offer short courses for aspiring and current media personnel to address the time constraints they face. Additionally, BK can support good journalism by involving genuine journalists in social projects and promoting their work among its followers. Ultimately, the article calls for BK to take a more proactive role in fostering a better media environment in the country.

While for an individual, the road to spiritualism starts with a. Absence of greed b. Service before self and c. Simple living and high thinking, for a journalist, it starts with his concern for and commitment to the common man – the underdog of society. Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest journalist of our time because he talked of Antodiya.

The question is how BK can help us become better media persons?. The answer is simple: By teaching us meditation. If you sincerely do it, your mind gets purified, and your thinking improves. You will feel that good and noble thoughts are coming to your mind.

One common problem is that the media is a very preoccupying profession and media persons, especially journalists, are always short of time. And this is a big problem. It is suggested that the coordinators of the media wing of BK should design some short-term duration courses with the help of media teachers to overcome this problem. These courses, both for youngsters aspiring for a career in media as well as for in-service media persons, can be delivered at BK centres, which have all the facilities for such training.

But the BK organisation can help build good media in the country in several other ways too. It can identify good and genuine journalists and involve them in various social projects, which other wings of the BK organisation are engaged in. Moreover, it can identify media persons who are running their small organisations and can recommend their media products to the large number of BK followers in India and abroad.

The fact is that to build a really good media in the country, the BK will have to play a much wider and bigger pro-active role than it has been doing so far.
