Kishori Lal Sharma, originally from Punjab, the newly-elected MP from Amethi is the biggest news of this election. A last-minute entry in the fray when names of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and even Robert Vadra were being thrown around, a simple unknown name Kishori Lal Sharma suddenly made national headlines. He was pitched against the high-profile Smriti Irani who had made a permanent place in the BJP establishment after trouncing the former Congress President Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 elections.

Having been a sincere worker in the Gandhi family establishment since 1983, he was familiar with all the issues and problems in Amethi and neighbouring Rae Bareli which has been a Congress bastion for decades.

And ultimately that sincerity and familiarity seem to have worked for him.

In a brief interview with this writer Kishori Lal looked like having his feet on the ground. Not a word of controversy, not a word against his adversaries, he stuck to telling his side of the story.

Article at a Glance

Kishori Lal Sharma, a humble and dedicated worker associated with the Gandhi family since 1983, has emerged as the biggest giant-killer of this election. He unexpectedly won the Amethi seat, defeating high-profile Smriti Irani.

Sharma's familiarity with the local issues and problems in Amethi and Rae Bareli, a Congress bastion, worked in his favor. In an interview, he remained grounded and focused on his side of the story, avoiding controversy. Sharma credited Priyanka Gandhi's support and the Gandhi family's connection with Amethi as key factors in his victory.

He also highlighted the impact of Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra on the election outcome. Sharma's sincerity and dedication to the Gandhi family have earned him a significant win, marking a new chapter in Amethi's political landscape.

Q. When exactly did you come to know that you were going to contest from Amethi this time?

A. I came to know about the decision of the Congress High Command on May 2, 2024.

Q. Did you ever feel nervous as you were fighting against a high-profile Minister like Smriti Irani or did you feel you will win the seat with the support of Priyanka Gandhi, who had been camping there?

A. Even before the nominations for elections had started Priyanka Gandhi  arrived at Amethi District Congress Committee office and promised us all support. Where was the question of feeling nervous after that?

Q. What was the bigger factor in your election campaign, national issues or local issues?

A. The connection of the Gandhi family with Amethi was itself the biggest factor. The people realized their mistake of 2019. What will you call this a national or a local issue?

Q. How did Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra help the party in the elections?

A. The huge gathering of people from far and wide came to listen to Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra. It  was a  proof that Amethi had made up its mind this time to support Congress.

Q. This election has considerably brought down the status of Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath. What scenario do you see now?

A. The Congress fought elections to restore the democratic space in the country not to bring down or raise the status of someone. We leave that analysis to the media.

Q. Do you feel that now after this defeat Smriti Irani will be given a high position only to taunt the public who voted her out?

A.  This is for the BJP and the NDA to decide. We have nothing to do with this.

Q. And lastly, all of us in Delhi would like to know how is your family connected with the Nehru family.

A. On a personal note I can say that my elders had always been influenced by the Gandhi Nehru policies. It was through the late Rajiv Gandhi that I got the chance to get associated with the Gandhi family.

We have been with the Gandhi family since 1983 and this would continue till my last breath. Even my coming generation is also totally influenced by the Gandhi family.
