The decisive victory of Republican Donald Trump in the presidential contest on November 5 over Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris has very significant lessons to draw as it sounds like a death toll of the politics of principles and morals.

The rise of crime and criminals, deceit and falsehoods, management of the justice system, hate for the weak and oppressed, monopolistic capitalism, pro-rich, pro-white, creating an illusion by making tall promises and a resolute reassertion of the male chauvinism and prejudice against the women folk in the oldest democracy are some of the other discernible features of the just concluded US presidential contest.

While the trend of shifting politics to the right is worldwide this is more blatant and disturbing in the US as America was perceived as a dream destination for the oppressed, politically persecuted and ambitious individuals from across the world. At the same time, interesting parallels exist between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s biggest democracy.

A majority of the US electorate appears to be ready to overlook crime and criminals thus negating rather than overturning the ideals of the American freedom struggle called the American Revolution which was against British colonialism and Imperialism and for the establishment of a just society. The American Revolution was inspired by the French Revolution’s promise of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. It is evident that elected US President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony charges and elected a criminal to the highest executive post of America thus sending a signal that crime pays rich dividends in the long run provided one can manage the justice system or bend it to one’s advantage.

Article at a Glance

Donald Trump's victory over Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election carries significant implications for American politics. It highlights a troubling shift towards crime, deceit, and a disregard for the principles of justice that once defined the nation.

Trump's win reflects a growing acceptance of white supremacy and anti-immigrant sentiment, which threatens the dreams of many, including marginalized communities like Afro-Americans and the LGBTQ population. Additionally, his administration is expected to undermine global climate change negotiations, recalling his previous withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.

Trump's approach, marked by empty promises and a lack of clear plans, raises concerns about women's rights, particularly regarding reproductive justice. The election results reveal an unsettling readiness among voters to overlook serious allegations against Trump, suggesting a shift in societal values that prioritizes power over integrity. Overall, his presidency may lead to significant setbacks for social justice and environmental progress.

The United States of America’s history, since its creation in 1776 when 13 American colonies declared independence from Great Britain, has been that of immigrants which included people from all continents who made America the leading nation and a super power but the electoral result betrays an anti-immigrant trend and shows that White supremacy has decisively impacted the voting behaviour hugely benefitting Trump. The new rump administration is certainly going to reinforce these trends through its policies and actions poring cold waters on the dream of millions including Indians who aspired to reach US shores to fulfil their dreams.

Within the US, weaker and poorer sections of society like Afro-American blacks and the LGBTQ community are going to be the victims of the Trump administration's pro-white policies.

One of the biggest and most ominous setbacks of Trump’s victory is the ongoing Global Climate Change negotiations. A dark shadow hangs on the COP29 (29th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) meeting that began on November 11 at Baku capital of Azerbaijan- as the US is going to oppose the talks sabotaging any positive outcome. The meeting is scheduled to end on 22 November.

Baku meeting was expected to end with an agreement on a new fiancé target to help developing countries cope with the deleterious effects of global warming in the background of 2023 and 2024 turning out to be the warmest years. Global warming is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

However, the recent US presidential election result, with Donald Trump's win, has cast a dark shadow over these negotiations. Trump’s return has reignited fears among climate scientists, researchers and global stakeholders. His previous term (2017-21) was marked by significant climate rollbacks, including the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement- a move he has pledged to repeat. In short, the coming of Trump has endangered human survival from the impact of Climate Change.

Trump’s use of deceit, falsehood and weaving dreams away from hard reality are traits with which he has led a vast majority of the American voters up a garden path. Making America Great Again slogan has played a big role in his victory but unfortunately, he has no clear roadmap for achieving the goal. Making promises has always been the favourite instrument of authoritarian leaders and Trump is no exception to it.

Devaluation of academic excellence and contempt for educational degrees is yet another feature that the Trump victory underscores.

Yet another negative development of Trump’s return to power is related to women's rights and place in society. His victory is a serious setback to the right to abortion which is being opposed by the Republicans and its male followers. Trump had clearly said that he wouldn’t sign a federal abortion ban and that states should decide their policies. The new Trump Administration, most likely, would restrict abortion ban nationwide without explicitly banning it. New Administration policies are going to adversely impact Reproductive Justice.

The most surprising rather appalling feature of Trump’s triumph is that the American voter decided to ignore rather than overlook his alleged sexual misconduct against 20 women. American society is ready to honour a man whose honesty and integrity are challenged and questionable.
