Friends, colleagues and family members commemorate the lives of those they admire in several ways, like remembrance meetings, advertisements in newspapers and posts on social media platforms. Those who have money give medals, scholarships and even contribute towards building rooms in dharamshalas and private schools. However, the MBKM Foundation, a not-for-profit voluntary organisation for voluntary social work, remembers one of its founding members in a different manner. Floated by retired bureaucrats and professionals and their friends as a family trust, the foundation seeks to pay back to society what society gave them by way of respect, honour and socio-economic status. And when you pay back, you would naturally like to give to those who need it most.

The Foundation picks up young women from modest backgrounds who, by their determination and hard work, have achieved excellence in various areas of activity, crossing the barriers of socio-economic backwardness and defying the norms of a system governed by the status quo. “We do not celebrate the celebrate, says Foundation, Secretary-General Rajeev Mathur, we select and reward those girls whose grit and determination no one knows beyond their families and no one realises.

“By picking up such girls and rewarding them at a VIP -led function we want to give a message to society to not only recognise and reward talent among weaker sections of society but also to project these award winners to serve as a model to others in this socio-economic strata”, says the Patron of the Foundation R.S. Atroley, the 85-year-old technocrat who as a civil engineer contributed a lot to the expansion of western railways network.

The MBKM Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation founded by retired bureaucrats and professionals, honours the memory of its founding member, Dr. Rama Saharia, by recognising young women from modest backgrounds who excel in various fields.
Unlike traditional memorials, the Foundation aims to highlight the achievements of these women, who often go unnoticed, to inspire others in similar socio-economic situations. At their recent awards ceremony in Noida, four women were celebrated for their contributions: Dr. Priyanka in higher education, journalist Zeba Hasan, social worker Sadhna Bharti, and music teacher Rimpa Kumari.
The event featured prominent speakers, including former Defence Secretary Dr. Yogendra Narain, who emphasised the importance of recognising women in environmental and skill development fields. The Foundation's efforts aim to empower women and foster a culture of recognition and support for hidden talents in society.

An advocate by profession, Mr C.K. Srivastava, who did all the necessary work to set up the foundation, says that the Foundation has set up the awards to commemorate the memory of Dr. Rama Saharia, an eminent educationist who served as Principal at three colleges of the U.P. government. A psychologist by training, Dr Rama always had a soft corner for girl students coming from families of scarce means and the poor college employees working on a monthly contractual basis.

“Dr Rama was a person of varied interests. Besides being an educationist, she wrote for dailies and periodicals on women-related issues, was a good singer and was passionate about skills like knitting, embroidery and tailoring. We, therefore, decided to give awards for excellence in four areas of higher education, media writing/production, social work and fine/performing arts.

At the Second Awards function   last Saturday, the following young working women were awarded for their contribution in the areas mentioned against their names:

•      Dr. Priyanka – Assistant Professor, recognised for her outstanding work in higher education

•      Ms. Zeba Hasan – Journalist, honoured for achievements in media and writing

•      Ms. Sadhna Bharti – Social Worker, awarded for her efforts in women’s rights awareness and empowerment

•      Ms. Rimpa Kumari – Music Teacher, celebrated for excellence in fine arts and music

The very-award function at Noida was presided over by former Defence Secretary Dr Yogendra Narayan, at which well-known political leader and former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahai was the Chief Guest. Other personalities on the dias were eminent educationist and media contributor Prof Lallan Prasad,

National Media Coordinator of Brahmakumaris, Sushant and Foundation office-bearers. Mr Suneed Shastri, well-known politician and son of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, was the Chief Guest at the first memorial awards function last year last year.

In his presidential address, Dr Yogendra Narain commended the Foundation’s impactful work. He voiced concern over pressing issues like environmental degradation and unemployment, and suggested that future editions of the award should also recognise women working in areas of the environment and skill development. Chairman of the Foundation, Prof Pradeep Mathur, told this reporter that Dr Narayan’s suggestion will be considered at the next core committee meeting of the foundation.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest and former Union Minister Mr. Subodh Kant Sahai pointed out the growing lack of interpersonal communication in today’s society. He applauded the MBKM Foundation for identifying and nurturing hidden talents and urged everyone to encourage and empower more women through awareness and shared values. He congratulated all award recipients and encouraged them to become beacons of inspiration.

The President of the Selection Committee of award winners, Prof (Dr) Archana Verma and well-known social worker Ashok Srivastava of Navratan foundation also spoke on the occasion. Well-known journalists K.B. Mathur, Sayed Nooruzzam, Sudhanshu Mishra, Anil Maheshwari, Khaleeq Ahmed, Laxman Rai, Saket Dinkar and Dr Muzaffar Gazali also shared their perspectives and supported the initiative.
