AI-generated content may be incorrect.Who has emerged as the real winner of the 12 -day Israel-Iran war ?

While both Israel and Iran are claiming victory and Israel says that it has achieved its objective , is this Jewish country which started the war the real winner ? Or Iran, the country which counter-attacked Israel and claims that it forced Israel to bite the dust the real winner ?   At best it has been  a drawn match between the two. Now the position is that Iran has suffered a lot and so is the case with Israel though with massive Jewish money and support of the Western world, Israel’s recovery will be much faster. For as financial resources for reconstruction  Iran will have to depend on itself. Russia has no money, and China does not believe in financial resource transfer. Rich Arab countries would prefer to play safe.

So who is the real gainer from this 12-day war.

Is the real winner is the U.S. which enforced ceasefire and brokered peace between the two warring countries of West Asia ?

Yes and No.  The real winner is Donald Trump who defied public opinion even that of his own country to do what he  wanted. He raised the issue of Iran’s nuclear proliferation at a time when the world was facing much bigger problems ; encouraged Israel to take an aggressive posture and assert itself in Gaza and become the strongest  power in the region; ignored all inputs on  the real status of Iranian nuclear programme ; convinced a willing Netanyahu about the imminent threat of an Iranian nuclear bomb to Israel’s very existence ; prepared it to attack Iran ; disrupted the negotiations on nuclear deal with Iran ; supported the Israel aggression; ignored advice of  his own intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard and bombed Iran while a shocked world watched in silence. And after the bombing ,worked overtime for an end to hostilities claiming that the objective had been achieved .

Column at a Glance
The recent 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran has left both nations claiming victory, yet the reality suggests a stalemate. While Israel, backed by Western support, may recover swiftly, Iran faces significant challenges in reconstruction due to limited financial resources. The article posits that the true victor may be the U.S., particularly Donald Trump, who manipulated the situation to undermine Iran's influence in the region.

Trump's aggressive stance on Iran's nuclear capabilities and support for Israel's actions aimed to diminish Iran as a rallying point for anti-U.S. forces. The piece warns of a global trend towards authoritarianism, drawing parallels to historical fascism, and emphasizes the need for social activism to combat this rising tide. Ultimately, it questions whether society is prepared to confront these challenges and prevent a regression into oppressive governance.

What was his objective and what Trump achieved by playing  this quixotic game of dangerously high stakes ?

The objective of the U.S.-Israel assault was not so much to dismantle Iran’s nuclear facilities as to subjugate and demoralise the last powerful Muslim country which had been  taking a strong and determined anti-U.S.( read anti-West , anti-Christian and anti-Jew) posture, and was a rallying point for all anti-U.S. forces. The U.S. ,in collaboration with its Western , allies has done this earlier  in case of Egypt, Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan and more recently in Syria. It has no problems with  powerful Muslim countries like Pakistan and Turkey which play what essentially is the U.S. power game in international scenario.

The reports that the U.S. and Iran may soon be sitting on the negotiation table clearly indicates the trend of things to happen. The U.S. may even help Iran to rebuild itself but one thing  is certain  that it will not allow Iran to be a rallying point of anti-Western world forces. And whatever Iran may say for public consumption in coming days Iran will not do so.

But why Trump and his supporters want to pursue this objective ? How could Iran, howsoever belligerent in its attitude on policy issues, could  be a threat to mighty U.S. and its West European allies ?

The answer is : A mindset that hates existence of  a worldview other than one’s own –a disposition that abhors divergence of opinion –a temperament that hates democracy in its true meaning while using it to climb to power – a totalitarian approach and a fascist style of governance that brooks no dissent .

Trump is not alone in this. In many parts of the world ultra-right political organisations are capturing seats of power by capturing mass support through populist slogans and promise of a dream world in near future. Nearer home in India, when Modi’s  BJP came to power in the year 2014 it called for a Congress Mukt Bharat and started a campaign to erase the tradition of democratic protest by maligning all it symbols from Mahatma Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi.

Powerful people in seats of authority in many counties no more speak language of reconciliation. They  now speak the language of force, false pride,  fear and hate. As part of a deliberate strategy the press is being attacked, courts are being weakened, universities are being turned into obedient institutions, and scientific temperament is being questioned  and replaced by religious practices and superstition. Every independent institution in these country is being targeted one by one be it education, voluntary societies, the press, or  the judiciary. The areas like climate change, gender equality, empowerment of disadvantaged sections and human rights are being undermined and support to these areas is being withdrawn.

Is history repeating itself ? Are we going back by 100 or so years in to the early 20th century world which witnessed rise of powerful dictators like Hitler, Mussolini  and Stalin who made fascism the ideology of governance and forced the world into two world wars and the untold misery that resulted because of the catastrophe.

Let us hope not. But a lot of hard work and social activism is required to keep the ghost of fascism away from our door steps. Are we ready to do that is the big question.
