As the high from India’s dramatic Test win in England fades, international cricket marches on — this time to the UAE for the T20 Asia Cup. And with it comes the familiar churn of selection debates for Team India.

The last T20Is India played were at home against England — a five-match series India won 4-1. Before that came the crowning glory: victory in the T20 World Cup in the USA. Now, as selectors gear up for the Asia Cup, the logical starting point would be the World Cup-winning squad, IPL 2025 performances, and recent T20I series — not the just-concluded Test series in England.

India’s T20 World Cup 2024 Squad:

•               Rohit Sharma (c)

•               Hardik Pandya (vc)

•               Yashasvi Jaiswal

•               Virat Kohli

•               Suryakumar Yadav

•               Rishabh Pant (wk)

•               Sanju Samson (wk)

•               Shivam Dube

•               Ravindra Jadeja

•               Axar Patel

•               Kuldeep Yadav

•               Yuzvendra Chahal

•               Arshdeep Singh

•               Jasprit Bumrah

•               Mohammed Siraj

Since then, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from T20Is. Their replacements were trialled in the England series.

Openers and Top Order: Who Gets In?

India’s focus now shifts from the Test win in England to the T20 Asia Cup in the UAE, where selectors face key decisions for a squad reshaped after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja’s T20I retirements. Abhishek Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are likely to open, with Shubman Gill pushing for a top-order spot after a strong IPL 2025. Tilak Varma is a contender to replace Kohli, while Suryakumar Yadav is set to captain.

In the wicketkeeping slot, KL Rahul’s IPL form gives him an edge over Sanju Samson, with Rishabh Pant’s fitness uncertain. Hardik Pandya returns as vice-captain and lead all-rounder, with Washington Sundar a possible Jadeja replacement. Spinners Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakravarthy are favoured, while Bumrah, Arshdeep, and Siraj form the pace trio. The Asia Cup squad will mark India’s transition into a post-Rohit-Virat-Jadeja era, balancing continuity with experimentation.

Abhishek Sharma impressed as an opener against England, while Sanju Samson struggled, averaging just over 10. Jaiswal should reclaim his spot at the top, forming a promising pair with Abhishek.

Tilak Varma, who played at No. 3 against England and did well, is a strong contender to replace Kohli. Gill, who had a standout IPL 2025 season, is hard to ignore — both for his form and his class. He offers depth in the top order.

Wicketkeepers: Rahul vs Pant vs Samson

KL Rahul has been prolific in IPL 2025 and notably became the fastest to 5000 IPL runs — ahead of Warner, Kohli, and Rohit. He should edge out Samson, especially given Sanju’s recent dip in form.

Pant, though undeniably talented, has struggled in the T20 format and didn’t shine in IPL 2025. His fitness after missing the last Test in England is also unclear. If he isn’t ready, the selectors might stick with Samson or bring in Dhruv Jurel.

Middle Order and Allrounders

With Surya likely to captain, and Tilak and Gill rounding out the batting core, the squad looks balanced.

Hardik Pandya returns as vice-captain and lead all-rounder. Jadeja’s spot could go to Washington Sundar, who played the England series and offers more T20 utility in UAE conditions. Shivam Dube’s place is uncertain — he could be left out if the team opts for an extra spinner or batter.

Spin and Pace Units

Among spinners, Kuldeep and Axar are almost certain picks. Varun Chakravarthy made an impact against England and could be preferred over Chahal, who, despite being in the World Cup squad, didn’t get a game.

This could be harsh on Chahal, but with UAE’s spin-friendly conditions, Varun's mystery spin may be more valuable. Bishnoi, though promising, seems to be on the fringes for now.

In the pace department, Bumrah and Arshdeep are undroppable. Siraj rounds out the trio. Shami is unlikely to be considered, and there’s little talk of him in the current T20 mix.

Likely Squad Composition:

1.             Openers: Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal

2.             Backup Openers: Shubman Gill, KL Rahul

3.             Middle Order: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma

4.             Wicketkeeper-batters: KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (or Samson/Jurel if Pant isn’t fit)

5.             Allrounders: Hardik Pandya (vc), Washington Sundar

6.             Spinners: Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy

7.             Pacers: Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj

If Squad is Expanded to 16:

•               Batter Options: Rinku Singh or Shreyas Iyer

•               Allrounder Option: Shivam Dube

•               Bowler Option: Yuzvendra Chahal

With selection headaches aplenty, one thing is certain — the Asia Cup squad will be a telling sign of India’s post-Rohit-Virat-Jadeja era. Whether the selectors opt for continuity or experiment, the expectations will remain sky-high.

Let’s wait and watch.
