Poll experts and seasoned election analysts may call the continuous attacks, digs and jabs against Nationalist Congress Parry founder Sharad Pawar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his campaign rallies in Maharashtra intriguing or obvious but they indeed are a signal that the BJP and its two allies are on a losing wicket in the state which sends 48 MPs to the Lok Sabha.

Alarmed at the intelligence reports about sympathy factor favouring two of his most formidable rivals Sharad Pawar and Shvi Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray hugely, the Prime Minister has sharpened his decided to take on the NCP supremo, top level sources said. In the coming days, Modi will attack Uddhav Thackeray too, they pointed out.

Article at a Glance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intensified his attacks on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar during campaign rallies in Maharashtra, a state with 48 Lok Sabha seats. This verbal offensive is seen as a sign of the BJP's concern over intelligence reports indicating a sympathy factor favoring Pawar and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray. Modi has accused Pawar of not doing enough for farmers during his tenure as Union agriculture minister and called him a "wandering soul."

In response, Pawar has defended himself, stating that his soul is dedicated to the cause of farmers and the common people. Modi has also urged voters not to waste their votes on opposition parties and highlighted the BJP's achievements in reducing poverty and providing free rations. The ongoing electoral battle in Maharashtra is crucial for the Prime Minister and the BJP, as they aim to retain their numbers and help their allies' breakaway factions win seats. With public sympathy growing for both Pawar and Thackeray, Modi faces challenges in maintaining the BJP's previous electoral success in the state.

A day after terming Sharad Pawar as a wandering soul yesterday in Pune, Modi on Tuesday continued his attack on the NCP leader, saying he did not do much for farmer while being the Union agriculture minister. Modi had called Pawar a “bhatakti atma’ in Hindi which by any standards of political discourse is mean and is surely hitting below the belt.  If it does not manage success it spoils others' good work. Maharashtra has been a victim of it, Modi had said at a rally on Monday, hitting out at Sharad Pawar without taking his name.

When a big Maharashtra leader was Union agriculture minister, farmers used to make rounds of sugarcane commission for their arrears, Modi said at a rally in Malshiras of Solapur district in Maharashtra without taking the name yet making everyone understand who he is hitting at this game was started by the same leader 45 years ago. It was just for his own ambition that Maharashtra has always been an unstable state. As a result, several chief ministers could not complete their full term, Modi had said.

At the Malshiras rally today, Modi asked voters not to waste their vote by giving it to Congress and other opposition parties. Why waste your vote by giving it to those who are not contesting even the minimum number of seats needed for a simple majority in Lok Sabha, he said.

He asserted that when there is a strong government in the country, its focus is on the present as well as the future. Modi said people are seeing the difference between his government's 10 years and Congress rule of 60 years. Congress leaders kept talking about eradicating poverty in every poll but would not do anything after that, he said.

Modi said that in the last 10 years, his government was able to bring 25 crore people out of poverty and 80 crore are getting free ration.

Interestingly, Modi made these remarks at a rally in Pune yesterday in presence of Sunetra Pawar, who is contesting the Baramati Lok Sabha seat against daughter of Sharad Pawar Supriya Sule. Sunetra Pawar is the wife of Ajit Pawar nephew of Sharad Pawar. Ajit Pawar had led the rebellion against NCP founder Sharad Pawar breaking the party to join the government of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Addressing the rally, PM Modi said, "Unsatisfied spirit in Maharashtra led to instability 45 years ago and now the work of destabilising the country is being done by this person."

Without wasting any time, Pawar hit back at Modi over his ‘bhatakti atma’ jibe, saying his soul is “avastha” for the cause of farmers and the common man, and ready to be “restless” “ hundred times” to highlight their plight. Pawar’s reply has gone down very well with the ordinary men and women and is likely to damage the BJP and its allies in state.

In 1978, Sharad Pawar broke ranks with the Congress (U), the breakaway faction of the Indira Gandhi-led Congress, and formed a government with the support of the Janata Party. In the process, Sharad Pawar became the youngest Maharashtra Chief Minister at 38.

Sharpening his attack on Sharad Pawar, PM Modi said, "Forty-five years ago, a great leader started this game for his ambition. Since then, Maharashtra has been dragged into a period of instability, after which many Chief Ministers could not complete their tenure."

"There are some wandering souls. Those whose desires are not fulfilled, their souls continue to wander. If their own work is not done, they start spoiling the work of others," he said.

Outcome of the ongoing electoral battle for the Lok Sabha in Maharashtra which has a five- phased election is very crucial for the Prime Minister and the BJP. In 2019 general elections, the BJP had won 23 seats and Shiv Sena had 18 booked victory in 18 seats leaving 4 seats to the NCP and one seat to the Congress.

The BJP must at least retain its numbers and help its ally’s breakaway factions of the NCP and Shiv Sena to win also. With reports of public sympathy growing for both Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, Modi is batting on a turning wicket to use a cricket analogy.
