The Return of ‘Ugly American’

A close-up of a person with glasses AI-generated content may be incorrect.In a clear demonstration of his naked imperial ambitions, President Donald Trump last week  shocked the world, saying that the US would take over the war-ravaged Gaza Strip and develop it economically after Palestinians are resettled elsewhere.

Trump’s announcement marks the end of the US traditional policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The move is akin to the late 50s and early 60\s when the US was so unpopular in the Non-aligned world and was called ‘Ugly American’.

Trump unveiled his surprise plan, without providing specifics, at a joint press conference on Tuesday with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump's proposal earlier on Tuesday for the permanent resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza to neighbouring countries, calling the enclave - where the first phase of a fragile Israel-Hamas ceasefire is in effect - a "demolition site".

During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump described Gaza as a "demolition site" and expressed intentions to dismantle unexploded ordnance while creating jobs and stability in the region. His proposal has drawn widespread criticism from both allies and adversaries, as it contradicts longstanding international views that Gaza should be part of a future Palestinian state. Additionally, a U.S. military plane recently deported 104 Indian nationals as part of Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration, indicating ongoing immigration enforcement efforts.

 

Trump can expect allies and foes alike to oppose any US takeover of Gaza strongly. The US taking a direct stake there would run counter to longtime policy in Washington and for much of the international community, which has held that Gaza would be part of a future Palestinian state that includes the occupied West Bank.

"The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too," Trump told reporters. "We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site."

“If it's necessary, we'll do that, we're going to take over that piece, we're going to develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it'll be something that the entire Middle East can be very proud of," Trump added.

"I do see a long-term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East," he said, adding that he had spoken to regional leaders, and they supported the idea.

When asked who would live there, Trump said it could become home to "the world's people."

India is yet to make its response to Trump’s announcement.

Meanwhile, the US military plane transporting 104 Indians deported as part of President Donald Trump's campaign against illegal immigrants has landed in Amritsar. The C-17 military aircraft took off from an airport in Texas yesterday.

Each deported Indian national onboard the flight is "verified", indicating New Delhi's involvement in the process. This is likely the first of many such flights that will bring illegal Indian immigrants in the US back.

Immediately after he took over as US President, Trump started cracking down on illegal immigrants. Earlier, US military aircraft have flown back immigrants deported to Guatemala, Peru and Honduras.
