Culmination of almost eight  years of hard work by the NGOs in the troubled Kashmir  valley initiated by Prayas Juvenile Aid Society has been widely acclaimed.

Led by Founder General Secretary of Prayas, Mr Amod K Kanth,a 14- day extravaganza called J and K Sambhaav Utsav and showcasing the best of crafts and cuisines from  Jammu and Kashmir in the J and K House in New Delhi, brought cheers for everyone involved in this exercise. The Utsav concluded last week.

After taking a round of the 50 plus stalls displaying the apparel, honey, dry fruits, pashmina stalls and mouth watering cuisine and the unique Kahva, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, who inaugurated the programme  asserted that J and K was on  a positive profile thanks to the initiatives taken by various NGOs of the State.

During those troubled times of 2016 when youth of the state were being branded as stone- pelters Mr.Kanth took the initiative to involve the numerous NGOs of the state who were only too willing to join the efforts .

Recalling those initial days, Mr.Kanth says,"Meetings of NGOs we organised held in the state were eye-openers. We found that the troubled youths were looking for opportunities to join the mainstream and seeking employment in a valley so full of talented youngsters. It just needed a spark which we as NGOs were only too happy to provide."

This task was facilitated by the NITI Aayog then led by Amitabh Kant that helped in organising and facilitating the efforts of the NGOs.

Talking to this writer from Kashmir, Mustafa Nazir who is the Manager of the Kashmir Prayas unit said that since 2016 they had taken baby steps which brought about such a transformation.

"We set up the Prayas unit in Srinagar in 2016, next year we started a project to educate the youths and in 2018 came the big break when the NITI Aayog brought together 15 national and 45 local NGOs together and we set up an office the same year. In 2019, Prayas started training programs in disaster mangement in 6 districts of the state training 30 children in each district. We worked even during the Covid period on skill development such as tailoring and computer education for children. This unit has also been working in fields of human trafficking, preventing child marriage and Juvenile Justice."

And the pioneering work goes on as Prayas embarks on fresh training programs in crisis management and elimination of child beggary in April 2024.

At the end of the Sambhaav Utsav the Principal Resident Commissioner of J and K Rashmi Singh acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of the entire Prayas family especially the volunteers for their total support.

When called upon to share his success story, Mr. Mustafa Nazir took the opportunity to brief the gathering about Prayas and it’s journey in

Kashmir.
