After the second U.S. Plane carrying 119 illegal immigrants landed at Amritsar airport named after the fourth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Ram Das, on Saturday last, controversy over the choice of port of deportation has got murkier and more serious.
Allegations and counter-allegations are flying high as both the leaders of the ruling NDA alliance New Delhi and the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab are trying to score a political point over the anguish of those being unceremoniously deported by the Donald Trump Administration.
Intriguingly, the second US aircraft took off just as the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was basking in the glory of his “high-profile” visit to the United States.
While the first of 104 deportees had 30 from Punjab the second batch deported by the Trump Administration had 119 Indians, including 67 from Punjab, who had resorted to illicit means to seek green pastures abode.
In addition to the 67 from Punjab, 33 are from Haryana, eight from Gujarat, three from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Goa, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, and one each from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, and Kashmir. The third U.S. plane carrying deportees is now expected to land soon .
While Donald Trump’s “deportation tirade” looks unstoppable, it has pitched not only the ruling AAP in Punjab but also other major political parties, including Congress, in fierce rhetoric over the choice of the port of deportation.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made a strong statement in Amritsar that the BJP-led NDA government was attempting to defame Punjab as part of a conspiracy. "The BJP-led Centre always discriminates against Punjab. It does not let go of any chance of defaming the state," Mann said while addressing the media in Amritsar.
"As part of a conspiracy, they are trying to defame Punjab and Punjabis," he said. Mann also questioned the Centre about the criteria for choosing Amritsar airport to land the second aircraft. "What is the criterion for choosing Amritsar? The Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs should tell me. Why did you choose Amritsar and not the national capital? You did this to defame Punjab and Punjabis," Mann said.
Noting that deportation is a national issue, Mann said it is being made to appear that only Punjabis migrate illegally.
While the NDA government did not officially react, RP Singh, a BJP leader, retorted, “Amritsar airport was the closest to the US.”
Taking to X, RP Singh said, "Amritsar is the closest international airport for flights entering India from the USA. That's why the US plane carrying illegal immigrants is landing there. Stop politicizing the issue and promoting conspiracy theories due to your lack of knowledge."
