The anniversary of the surrender of the Pakistan Army to Indian forces in Decca on Dec 16, 1971  leading to the  creation of independent nation of Bangladesh, formerly known as East Pakistan, was celebrated in a rather lacklustre manner this year. With the Lok Sabha elections so close it was expected that our Rashtravadi, anti-Pakistan government would glorify the occasion and assert India’s right on Pakistan -occupied Kashmir especially because that would be a good election issue.  The Supreme Court endorsement of abrogation of Article 370 has prepared a good ground for this.

But it seems the ruling dispensation is in a dilemma on this issue. And it is not difficult to understand.

For  the ruling  BJP-RSS outfit the victory of Indian forces has no doubt been  a great historical event and an achievement for Hindu Rashtravad. But the problem is that it was led by those who were either  not Hindus or were not the type of Hindus ( read Muslim -hating) whom the Hinduvat brigade likes.

The country was led to the war against Pakistan by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who had not only married a Parsi ( bhaktas think him to be a Muslim ) but was also daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, whose forefathers ,they believe, were Muslims.

Then the Indian Air Force Chief  Air Marshal Arjun Singh was also not a Hindu. Many of his brave pilots, like Wing Commander Cohelo ,who destroyed the communication lines and immobilised the Pakistan Army movement, were not Hindus.

The Army chief General Sam  Manekshaw was again a non Hindu and worst of all the Army general, J.S. Arora who received the surrender of the Pakistan Army was also not a Hindu.

Yet all these non Hindus combined to restore what all the Hindutva bhakts think to be the Hindu pride. Ill-informed,  prejudiced and history illiterate as they are they thought India's victory in Bangladesh war was the re-assertion of Hindu power after a “thousand-year slavery”.

The bhakts  understand neither history nor sociology. They do not know that the root of the Hindu-Muslim confrontation is in the divide-and-rule policy pursued by the British colonial masters in India. After the First war of Indian Independence they followed it even more vigorously.

The 1971 Bangladesh war was the anti-thesis of the British policy of divide-and-rule. The defence forces of the Hindu majority India went to liberate a Muslim-majority state created on the basis of two-nation theory from another Muslim state.

In fact the 1971 war and the  creation of Bangladesh was not only the refutation of the two-nation theory that was used by the British colonial rulers to divide Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan, it was also the rejection of communalism in all its forms as an instrument of state policy.

If they try to  understand the background and implications of the Bangaladesh war, the bhakts  can easily learn the following lessons :

1. The war was caused by the dictatorial rule of General Yahya Khan in Pakistan.

-A civilian govt.  is best for any country and the Army's job is to fight and defend a country and not to rule it.

2. A popular election was held in Pakistan in which Sheikh Mujibur Rehaman's Awami League won the majority.

In all fairness he should have been allowed to take over as the Prime Minister of undivided Pakistan.

-If you ignore the majority verdict the result would be disastrous.

3. The root cause of conflict between Muslims in West and East Pakistan was culture. The Bengali Muslims of East Pakistan were proud of their Bangla bhasha and admired Hindu poets and writers of Bangla. West Pakistani Muslims did not like this.

-Culture and not the religion binds a people.

4. The leading lights of India's military campaign against Pakistan in the 1971 war were non Hindus.

- Professional skills are learnt by hard and dedicated work and not by belonging to a caste or creed. Those who led India t victory were Indians . The religion they practice  was of no significance.

5. The state policy is decided by larger national concerns and not narrow religious considerations.

- India fought a war against Pakistan , a Muslim country,  but created another Muslim country that is Bangladesh. The war was neither against a Muslim country nor for any gain for Hindus.

If the Hinduvat brigade learns these lessons it would be good for them as well as our country as a whole.
