Hockey India will have a tough challenge on hands to get spectators for the FIH Pro League Mini Tournaments at Rourkela and Bhubaneswar from February 3. Indian women hockey team, fresh from its Silver medal triumph in the Hockey 5s World Cup at Muscat, will face the challenge of the Netherlands, Australia, China and the USA. All these four teams are looking forward to their participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics Games. India is the only women team that will compete in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar FIH Pro League games without any interest in the prestigious Olympic Games later this year. Why spectators will turn up when they know their team is not in the reckoning for the coming Olympic Games. You are spending huge some of money to provide training facilities to other teams free of cost, “ says Samanta Bahera, a senior sports journalist from Rourkela, adding he is not sure whether he himself would go and cover the FIH Pro League matches for women. He, however, says he may go and cover men matches as India has qualified for Olympic Games and these Games will serve as solid training ground for the tougher challenge ahead. Other journalists, too, agree that losers are seldom crowd pullers. They remind you of the 1987 Champions Trophy in Lahore when top seven of World Hockey were competing for honours and were watched by a few hundred spectators I. A stadium with a capacity of more than 50000. The reason Pakistan had finished 11th at the 1986 World Cup in London and hockey fans were disappointed with their team. Five years later when Pakistan played host to the World Cup and entered the final, the same stadium was bursting at its seams. Though Pakistan lost the final to the Netherlands, but hockey fans in Pakistan did all they could do to keep their team in high spirits. Since Indian women have little or nothing to look forward to after participation in the FIH Pro League, spectators, too, have their reservations to watch other top teams in action. The home crowd is expecting good performance from the men’s team and that may be the saving grace for both Rourkela and Bhubaneswar as hosts.(Words 385)
