Whether he wins or loses Arvind Kejriwal remains an unsolved mystery of Indian politics. He entered the world of power politics through an unusual route. Serving as a senior government official, he was drawn by the right to information movement and then came over to the Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement. From there he entered the electoral politics and got unexpected success to become one of the top leaders of the country. All this happened so quickly that no one could understand how and for what reasons his unprecedented growth in politics was .
It will be worthwhile to have a brief look at his meteoric rise in politics. In the year 2011, on the initiative of Arvind Kejriwal, Anna Hazare came to Delhi to lead the fight against corruption. The main target of this movement was the ruling Congress party and, therefore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also started taking interest in this movement. The Congress government of Dr Manmohan Singh arrested Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal on the day Anna was to sit on a fast demanding the Lokpal Bill and this proved to be a turning point in Kejawiwal’s political career.
After the success of the movement , Kejriwal decided to form a political party. However , Anna Hazare did not want to enter politics. The BJP , which had supported the anti-corruption movement , was also against the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party ( AAP) . But Kejriwal and his colleagues decided to form the party.
The Aam Aadmi Party promised to bring transparency in politics. The party said that every donation it receives will be accepted only through cheques and the name of every donor will be publicly displayed on the website. The party also announced that tickets to contest elections will be given only to those candidates who will be supported by grassroots workers and volunteers. Apart from this , the party promised to abandon VIP culture , saying that its leaders will lead simple lives. Later it backed out on all that it had promised.
Before coming to power, Kejriwal had no experience of party politics, but it must be admitted that he had the intelligence to understand the nuances of politics. He was able to assess well the situation in which Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi's Congress had become weak due to lack of public support and the Bharatiya Janata Party under Modi's leadership was rapidly trying to fill that vacuum in politics.
It is because of his ability to understand the empty field in politics that Kejriwal was able to give his party an unprecedented victory in the Punjab elections. In Gujarat and Haryana , where the BJP and Congress had a stronghold, he was not least successful . Kejriwal also knows that in Indian politics you should always talk about morality and values. His morality and honesty are in doubt just like the leaders of other political parties , but he has been climbing the ladder of electoral success by creating a good image in the minds of voters .
While Kejriwal himself became a victim of over-ambition due to his rapidly growing stature in politics , on the other hand, his political opponents also mobilized against him. After winning the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership were deeply hurt by the loss of the Delhi Assembly elections in 2015 and 2020. This led to an ego clash between Prime Minister Modi and Kejriwal and for the BJP , Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party became bigger enemies than Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.
It is often said that Kejriwal is a Hindutva at heart and has the covert support of the RSS. Those who say this believe that Kejriwal is opposed to Modi , not the saffron brigade and that his real political enemies are the Congress and other secular political parties with leftist leanings. If we look at the recent Gujarat and Haryana assembly elections and the Delhi Lok Sabha election of the previous year , this seems to be true to a large extent. Little wonder in the Delhi elections the Congress decided to pay back to Kejariwal in the same coin.
Apart from over-ambition, Kejriwal has two other problems. He is doing ideology-less politics and does not understand that such politics cannot survive for long. If he thinks that his inclination towards Hindutva will bring the Aam Aadmi Party closer to the RSS than the BJP , then it is his mistake.
His second problem is that despite calling himself the leader of Aam Aadmi Party and the son of the poor people of Delhi, his mental make-up is feudalistic , which is a common characteristic of our bureaucracy. For this reason, all those people were expelled from the party , whose personality was bigger than him and had social feelings. If all those people were to be in Aam Aadmi Party , then Aam Aadmi Party could have become a big challenge for BJP and Congress as a good and powerful party. But due to the tendency of keeping himself at the top perhaps because of a feeling of insecurity, Kejriwal ended this possibility. He forgot that the real way to rise in Indian politics is sacrifice , not getting a position.
Ultimately , the question arises: can a political party survive on just an anti-corruption agenda ? The journey of the Aam Aadmi Party shows that it is not possible to bring about a change merely by riding on the wave of populist slogans and public anger.
Today Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party are standing at the crossroads of the country's politics. Only the future will tell where they will go and how far they will reach.
