It was never the same. Defections on the eve of general elections have been a menace that Indian polity failed to handle. They are nothing new but not so massive as this time. The legislature did enact laws to check and control defections, especially when it comes to elected legislatures. Holding of by elections to fill vacancies caused by defections cost the State exchequer a lot. It is not only the money but also the morality involved in the entire game that political parties play to remain ahead of their opponents in “numbers”.

Developments in Punjab during the past few years in general and last few days in particular have been both shocking and revealing.

Three sitting Members of outgoing 17th Lok Sabha have changed from white to Saffron. They are Perneet Kaur, Ravneet Singh Bittu and Sushil Rinku. The Punjab BJP already has in its fold former Congress MPs from Amritsar - Capt Amarinder Singh - and Gurdaspur - Mr Sunil Jakhar.

Now three more have joined. Whatever the plans or intentions are, people who should have been the support base of these MPs may also be watching these developments with animated interest. Were they even given a hint of consultation before their leader not only changed loyalty but also started toeing an altogether different political ideology?

Politics is for change and change is the only thing that is permanent. Let us wait and watch what Punjab has in its political future.(Words 265)
