When the massacre of innocent tourists in Pahalgam by Pakistan-backed terrorists has put the entire country in a state of shock and all of us are in a tense mood, talking about fearsome, uncertain days ahead, it is natural to miss a good and positive item of news. I spotted this small heart-warming news the other day, and it made my day. After a long time, I could see a definite ray of hope in the prevailing atmosphere in the country, which is marked by a hate campaign, communal disharmony and political bickering on caste and communal lines.
This news is not from far-off New York, where the U.N. Secretary-General and several world leaders have expressed deep concern over the Pahalgam terrorist attack, or from Canada, where Prime Minister Mark Carney, who brings hope of restoring friendly ties with India, has secured the popular mandate. Rather, the heart-warming news is from a place much closer to our homes – it is from the temple town of Vrindaban in Mathura district, and it is welcome as it is a rebuff to the communal Hindutva elements indulging in their anti- Muslim campaign. The Pahalgam terrorist strike has given them another excuse to harp on their anti-Muslim rhetoric.
The members of the hate brigade have, of late, been holding meetings in the holy towns of Mathura and Vrindavan, urging Hindu shopkeepers and pilgrims not to have any trade or business dealings with Muslims. They have also been asking the Muslim shop-owners to write their proprietor’s name on their business establishments.
The famous Bankey Behari temple has firmly dismissed suggestions from the members of the hate brigade that Muslims rendering services to the shrine should be boycotted.
The temple’s priest and member of its administration committee Gynandra Kishore Goswami said that Muslims, particularly Muslim artisans and weavers have been playing a major role in weaving the dresses of Bankey Behari( Krishna Bhagwan) for decades and they have been doing the job of making items like intricate crowns and bangles for offering to the Lord and his devotees who come for his darshan from all over the country and abroad. Not only this many Muslims have high respect for Bankey Behari, and they often come to the temple.
Moreover, Goswami said that in Vrindavan, Hindus and Muslims have always lived together in peace and harmony, and there has been no communal tension. Most of the priests in this temple town and as well as the local leaders, have expressed their agreement with Goswami giving a body blow to hate campaigners.
The shopkeepers near the temple, both Hindu and Muslim, say that they have no problem with each other. Rather, they support each other in case of any problem. A Muslim shopkeeper said that by the blessings of Bankey Behari, they live in peace and do good business.
There have been many statements and campaigns led by eminent persons against the Hate Campaign of anti- Muslim Hindutva brigade. But BJP-RSS elements backed up Amit Malviya’s IT Cell always claimed the support of all genuine and religious-minded Hindus and their priestly class, and branded all these anti-communal people as anti-Hindu and anti-national . The rebuff by the Bankey Behari temple administration takes the wind out of the sails of this hate brigade.
The stance taken by the temple administrator is not only fair and just but also practical. The fools who form ranks of small and big BJP politicians leading the Hate brigades have no idea of the ground reality of our grassroots economy. In the wake of Ram Janmbhumi agitation in late 1980s , there was a sudden rush of Hindu devotees to offer their prayers at the make-shift Ram Lala temple in Ayodhya . Instead of getting worried and feeling insecure the local Muslims were very happy. Finally when the structure was demolished by vandals in December 1992 there were violent protests in many parts of the country but Ayodhya in Faizabad district and surrounding areas remained calm and cool. It surprised many people.
The reason was that devotees coming to the Ram Lala temple needed Ramnavmi , a big hand-woven cotton scarf of saffron colour with verse from Ramayan woven with thread and the wooden foot sleepers(kharwon) needed to enter the temple . Both the items are made by Muslims –scarf by Muslim weavers and wooden sleepers by Muslim carpenters. Their business flourished and they made good money. The Hindu devotees had no objection to wearing the products made by Muslims. This was never even talked about .
The hate brigades anti- Muslim thinking and the campaign are products of sick minds and all this deserves strong rebuttal. The highly venerated Bankey Behari temple has shown the way.
