A pertinent question being asked across the country whether the Lord Ram for whom the entire saffron ‘Parivar’ led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving no stone unturned and is sparing no tricks up its arms, is going to bless  the ruling party with another term in power in the next general elections?

Even a cursory look at the media and the way consecration ceremony was planned and executed with highest precision and deployment of all round resources and energies at an unprecedented scale is enough to pronounce that Modi is going to get a third term in power.

It would clearly mean that the electorate, which consists not only of north India where the Ram has been one of the main deities who is being revered and worshipped but also that of South, West and North East, are going to be carried away emotionally forgetting their daily struggles of bread and butter.

Though final answer will emerge only after the votes are counted and results of the Lok Sabha elections are announced yet if a popular saying in the Hindi speaking region of the country still carries conviction with people at large then results may shock seasoned political observers and electoral experts.

‘Bhuke bhajan na hoyen Gopala, yeh le apni Kanthi mala’, goes the saying in Hindi which loosely translated in English would mean ‘Empty stomachs can’t worship God, Oh God please take away your necklace’. In short, hunger and daily needs of bread, employment and shelter invariably are an equally significant factors which play a determining role in the electoral choices that a voter makes.

Inflation is such a serious problem than Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikant Das is finding it difficult to reduce rate of interests to facilitate cheaper loans for business and industry though the Modi government has been nudging the RBI to do so. The RBI Governor has gone on record to say that it is more important to tame inflation than reduce interest rates.

In this background, it is difficult to imagine that poor and middle class will dismiss spiraling inflation resulting in rising prices of essential commodities preferring the BJP as a token of thanks for its effort to give a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Equally, unemployment in the country that stands approximately around at 8 percent in the country in December 2023 is hurting youth severely. Rate of unemployment in rural country side is two percent higher than in the urban centers which is a disturbing factor. A disturbing concern is that almost 42 percent of graduates under 25 years of age are unemployed. Unemployment among women is far higher than men which clearly means that household incomes are declining.

Though the Modi government is constantly engaged in jugglery of statistics and data to claim that poverty has come down since the BJP came to power in 2014 yet ground realities reveal a different picture.

A discussion paper of the NITI Ayog claimed this month that multidimensional poverty in the country has declined from 29.17 percent in 2013-14 to 11.28 percent of the population in 2022-23, with about 2842 crore people moving out of this bracket in nine years to 2022-23. The Ayog also claimed that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh registered the largest decline but non official estimates point out that consumption rate among the same population has fallen instead of rising which means that the Modi government is trying to create in a false narrative for the 2024 general elections.

Notwithstanding the claims of the BJP government, fact is income inequality between the rich and poor has widened in the last 9 years. The wealthiest 1 percent of the population today own 50 percent of the country’s wealth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been telling the nation that India would be the world’s third largest economy in next few years but what it would mean for every Indian he does not care to talk or even mention. Even while India today is fifth largest economy of the world today, we stand at 139th position in terms of per capita income which means that being third largest would only enrich the rich.

Ongoing Rahul Gandhi led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra seems to have rattled the BJP top leadership as the BJP government of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is sparing no effort and is using every trick to create hurdles on the path of the yatra. Rahul Gandhi is slowly but surely gaining stature which will help the party in the elections along with able leadership of Congress chief Malikarjun Kharge.

Euphoria over the Ram temple will start waning sooner than expected and the harsh reality of the electoral battle would stare in the face of Prime Minister Modi who would be challenged by Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). The combined opposition is moving towards giving one to one fight to the NDA-BJP candidates in at least 400 Lok Sabha constituencies.

Though the ruling dispensation is trying its best to divide the opposition and break the INDIA alliance but all the leaders of the opposition alliance know that there is an existential threat for them. There is a growing realization among them that it is the last elections when there is a chance to defeat the BJP. (Words 900)
