It is pathetic to find that those who have the power to provide relief in disasters like the current one with Yamuna rising menacingly creating floods reaching the   Supreme Court the Delhi Government led by Aam Aadmi Party and the Lt. Governor V K Saxena representing the Centre, are engaged in a war of egos.

So much so that even the highest court of the land has to tell both sides to let go of their egos and take care of the people who are paying their salaries.

Senior and all-knowing journalists, unfortunately are enjoying the scene and writing edits saying that Yamuna is taking its space back that was taken up humans.

Point well taken, but is sarcasm the flavour of the season?

I don’t think so.

Under the circumstances it was a huge surprise to find that Prayas JAC Society, formed basically to take care of orphaned children in a Jhuggi fire in Jehangirpuri in 1988 has once again jumped into the battle to provide relief in the form of food to the affected people in the areas of Kashmiri Gate, Yamuna Khadar and Chilla village in the areas affected by floods.

Besides, the program that was basically meant for residents of shelter homes in flooded areas from July 13 to July 18 has also benefitted school students of Mori Gate School Number 1 who are all below 18. As many as 40-45 students have been benefitted under this program Smriti Das Media Manager of Prayas told us today. Overall around 200 to 500 people were provided relief in this drive which was organsied mainly by Avinash Giri of Prayas.

But this is not the first time Prayas JAC Society has joined such efforts, says Indu Rani Singh Executive Director of Prayas. She maintains that the chequered history of Prayas led by Amod K Kanth, a brilliant police officer in his career including the CBI, has always jumped in to tackle crisis of any kind in the country.

Recalling the events of the tsunami of 2004 in Tamil Nadu, the Floods of Kosi in Bihar (2009), the earthquake in Nepal in 2015 she says that most such disasters end up in tragedy specially for the vulnerable  children and women who become victims of trafficking.

But there have also been occasions when Kanth, being an astute police officer, has anticipated a crises and swung into action before the actual disaster.

This happened during the unprescedented Lockdown of 2020 that lasted two years.

Says Kanth,” The moment Prime Minister Modi started his speech to talk about the crisis of Corona I knew that a lockdown was on the cards. And before he could finish his speech I had alerted my senior staff at our Headquarters in Tughlakabad to bring their clothes and other necessities from home because they would not be able to go home for months,” he says.

So, while the politicians and industrialists with unlimited  resources, were playing safe and staying locked in their Kothis and palaces, the Prayas team was at work in the field with full protection available of course.

The job of an NGO cannot stop whatever happens because their mandate is to protect lives and Prayas did it admirably.

It must be remembered that for full one year there were no medicines and no vaccinations.

Those falling ill were not getting oxygen cylinders in hospitals. But the brave Prayas team stood its ground with the help of only masks and hand sanitisers and of course the prayers of the beneficiaries who had been totally left to fend on their own by the Government.
