For the first time in history three Indian Born Americans are in contention to get the Republican Party nomination for American Presidential contest in 2024.

They include Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley and Hirsh Vardhan Singh.

The former two will be among the eight candidates short-listed for taking part in the first Republican debate of the presidential primary to be held in Milwaukee tonight.

This has been announced the Republican National Committee on Monday.

The other candidates are Mike Pence former Vice President of Donald Trump,Chris Christie, ASR Hutchinson, Senator Tim Scott, Dony Burgum and de Santis.

Vivek Ramaswamy born of parents form Kerala has surprised pollsters by being bthe second most popular alternative to Donald Trump getting 10 per cent votes among the Republicans, Trump who is not taking part in the debate today is way ahead with 56 per cent votes in his favour despite several investigations and four indictments against him.

The candidates chosen for the open debate were given a deadline for 9 pm yesterday when they were expected to get at least 40,000 donors.

At 38, Vivek Ramaswamy happens to the youngest Republican nominee for this post, a renowned author of several books the most famous being ‘Wok Inc’.  A young entrepreneur who joined the campaign only in February this year he has a degree in biology from Harvard and Law degree from Yale Law School.

Nikki Haley has been in the good books of Trump being the UN Ambassador during his tenure, she prides herself for being the daughter of an Indian immigrant.

Hirsh Vardham Singh is an aeronautical engineer who calls himself an engineer not a politician because ‘engineers are trained problem solvers’.

Singh also gathered a lot of attention by declaring himself a ‘Pure Blood’ American because he has not taken a vaccine for COVID 19.

H calls himself a lifelong American, whatever that means and American First.

It is to be noted that even though all the eight candidates selected for open debate on TV are projecting themselves as nominees for 2024 polls, Donald Trump, who had lost to Democratic Party Joe Biden in 2020, retains his following among the people and remains a formidable candidate despite several ongoing cases against him.

As of 2023, about 47 million Indians are living in the US which includes 1.6 million visa holders,1.4 million naturalized Indians and one million are US Born residents.

One more reason for American politicians wooing Indians is that they are the highest earners among the Asians with an average household income of $123,700 which is higher than other Asian immigrants.

The survey also reveals that Indians constitute 79 per cent of college graduates.

A PTI report also reveals that that the number of people who identify as Asians in the US has nearly tripled in three decades.

By this reckoning Indo Americans constitute 1.2 per cent of the US population and second largest Asian American group after the Chinese Americans.
