Rekha continues to mesmerise viewers as no one else

By Amitabh Srivastava

A reluctant child artiste born on October 10, 1954, Bhanurekha Ganesan is today one of the most accomplished and celebrated actors of Bollywood today.

Such is the flavour of Rekha’s acting, singing, reciting poetry and her sheer presence at age 69 that one wonders how many of the present lot of actors would be able to match her.

Women in India have always been the butt of jokes and nasty comments not only in this country but everywhere in the world, especially if they are in showbiz.

Rekha could not be an exception even though she has the genes of Shivaji Ganesan.

Having entered as a child artiste in the Telugu film Rangeela Ratnam, Rekha reportedly cried copious tears when she was asked to do a kissing scene with Bishwajit in her debut film ‘Do Shikari’.

But since the film got in trouble with censors ‘Savan Bhadon’ against Navin Nischol is considered her first film which did create a sensation.

But those who saw Rekha in ‘Sawan Bhadon’ or even ‘Khoon Pasina’ with Amitabh Bachchan would not be able to recognize her in her later films like ‘Umrao Jaan’ or ‘Silsila’ or even ‘Khoobsoorat’.

Rekha’s name has been attached with many heroes mainly Kiran Kumar, Vinod Mehra etc but it was her ‘alleged affair’ with the Big B whose birthday comes tomorrow, that really changed her.

So torrid was this affair that when Yash Chopra managed to cast Amitabh, Rekha and Jaya Bachchan for ‘Silsila’ (1981) it was not a scoop but a coup of sorts.

We don’t know where this story would have ended if Amitabh had not met with that nearly fatal accident while shooting for ‘Coolie’.

It is learnt that Rekha was not allowed to enter the hospital where he was being treated and Jaya was by his side like his guardian angel all through. Reportedly, Amitabh Bachchan also had second thoughts about his love triangle after he came out of hospital where lakhs of fans were praying for his life all across the country.

Rekha also got her message and married Mukesh Aggarwal,a business from Delhi however the marriage did not last long and he committed suicide within one year.

Anyway, those who have been witness to those scorching stories between Rekha and Big B starting with ‘Do Anjane’ say that his grace and style have rubbed into Rekha.

She even came out with her own Yoga cassette which became a rage.

Later on, she took up singing challenges as well on the prompting of S D Burman and lent her sultry voice to songs in Khoobsoorat.

Today she is not heroine material of course, but she continues to be a scene stealer whenever given a chance.

It could be an awards function or a reality show the sensuous Rekha manages to leave behind a trail that is impossible not to admire.
