Is there any way to judge how accurate these astrological predictions are true?

Whether we are Bharat or India we are not going to stop celebrating our festivals.

Actually, our TV Babas and Dadis will ensure that we celebrate the coming Rakhi festival on two days August 30 and 31.

A double celebration means double the moolah for the Halwais, the phoolwala and brand new dresses for the Gen Next falling glibly for those clearance sales.

Is there any way to judge how accurate these astrological predictions are true?

In an exclusive telephonic conversation Media Map talked to Prof A S Natraj, former head of the Akhil Bhartiya Karnataka Vicharvadi Sangh who had offered Rs.1 crore to anyone who could answer five simple questions based on horoscope.

Earlier he had asked 20 questions but when no one took up the challenge he brought it down to Five.

Talking from Karnataka Prof Natraj said, ”I have been asking very simple questions from astrologers for the last 23 years but no one has come forward to accept it.”

His questions are simple-

He shows copies of Horoscopes of five persons and challenges them to answer-

1.What stream did this person take in graduation (Arts, Science or Commerce)

2.Whether the person is married (Give date and place)

3.What is the job of this person

4.Which pilgrim in Karnataka will this person visit in one month

5.Will this person buy a vehicle within a month

Asked about the various predictions being made on TV channels he says,” Let me tell you neither these TV Babas or anyone else has dared to take up my challenge so far. I have gone on more than 1500 TV shows and written books on the subject but not one has come out with an answer.”

But are not these TV programs telling people to wear some ring or some stone or follow a ritual are against the ‘scientific temper’ advocated by the Indian Constitution? Who will fight this menace?

Says Prof Natraj, ”You see, I am over 83 now. But earlier we did put up a fight. Ten years ago when we had a  Congress Chief Minister in Karnataka we did pressurize them to pass a resolution in the assembly against following superstitious practices. But the moment the BJP came in power they threw it in the dustbin.”

He adds, “Ever since Modi has come to power people are so scared to speak out about rationalism that attendance even at our virtual meetings has been going down. While earlier there used to be 100 to 150 learned persons talking and debating these fundamental issues, now we hardly get 25 to 30 people attending. They are all so scared speaking out.”

But how come no one accepted his challenge?

“The problem is that I am myself a student of astrology. I have prepared hundreds of horoscopes for my father and even written a book which sold in lakhs. So they can’t challenge my authority on the subject,” he says.

Interestingly, in 2014 an NGO Sai Lok Kalyan Sanstha had had sought a ban on astrological shown on TV in the Delhi High Court but the Court refused to intervene, saying that this was not in its domain.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw further said, ”As far as astrology is concerned, astrology/zodiac/prediction/forecast are to be found not only on TV but also in the print and news media. Astrology is being taught in the universities and is not confined to India alone.”

The Court went on to name Linda Goodman to say that the most popular international publication is a foreign publication.

Further, it asked the petitioner to approach the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting or Advertising Standards Council of India or the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council or the authorized officer under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act for the redressal of his grievances.

Which means, in effect that there is no respite from these Babas telling you how to tie a Rakhi, or which direction to sit while lighting the Dewali Diya or how this Rakshabandhan festival will affect the various Zodiac signs.

But whatever their own zodiac sign these marketing  Gurus in fancy clothes are going to have a gala time at our expense
