The Mystery Deepens Regarding the Non-committal Programme of China’s Supreme Leader

Gopal Misra

On her part, India has prepared a befitting welcome to the Chinese President, Xi JInping, Beijing, however, is yet to confirm his schedule. The two-day G20 Summit in New Delhi is scheduled September 9-10.
It is for the first time that India is hosting the Group of 20 Nations or G-20. It comprises--Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union (EU).
India being host of G-20 has setup an agenda for inclusive sustainable economic growth, especially focusing on Global South, most of these countries were colonized by the developed world.  During the non-aligned era, they had refused to join the then faction-ridden geo- politics  between the US-led Western powers, and the Eastern Bloc led by the then USSR.
The prominent leaders expected to be present in the summit include Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, France's President Emmanuel Macron, Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammad Bin Salman, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden, President of the European Council Charles Michel, and President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen.

The absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin is not surprising. He had missed the BRICS summit in South Africa, where he was represented by his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. Lavrov is expected to elad the Russian delegation at G-20 also. President Biden has expressed his hope that Jinping will be attending the New Delhi summit. The world leaders are also expected to meet each in the sidelines of the summit.
The Shadow Of BRICS
It is being suggested that in spite of the reluctance of India and Brazil, Jinping had succeeded in promoting the idea of BRICS currency against the US dollar. Also, Russia and China have succeeded in doubling the strength of BRICS at the recently held summit in South Africa. This five-member alliance  comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa has become a 11-member group adding the new members,  Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and UAE. They would be formally inducted on January 1, 2024.
BRICS was formed in 2009 with its four members. South Arica was inducted in 2011. As many as 40 new members are reportedly seeking its membership.
Cartographic Aggression
Another reason being attributed to the absence Jinping is that before his departure for India, China has published new maps depicting India’s vast territories including Arunachal as a part of China. Earlier, during his brief encounter with Indian PM Narendra Modi,JInping, according to the Chinese media and its foreign office, “Jinping advises both sides should bear in mind the overall interests” of ties and “handle properly the border issue”, according to China”. It was also stated that the meeting took place on the request of India. However, according Indian sources that they met since Beijing’s request for a meeting was pending.
Jinping Avoids Biden
It is also being stated that since Jinping is planning to promote BRICS currency for international trade, he might to avoid any meeting with the American president. According to well-informed sources,  China being the second most influential economic power after the USA might be the real gainer. It is the world’s largest trading nation and has been championing the internationalization of its currency, Yuan for the past several years. It is being noticed that Yuan’s acceptability has enhanced since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine War.
Ends.
