Nearly a fortnight before the two-day meeting of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance of 26 parties scheduled in Mumbai the Congress and the AAP seem to be playing hard to get.

This is totally unexpected after the cordial relations between the two parties in the Monsoon Session when the Congress and allied parties opposed the power of issuing Ordinance given to the Lt. Governor of Delhi as demanded by Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal.

After Alka Lamba spoke out yesterday about Rahul Gandhi telling the Congress to be ready to contest all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi there has been flurry of statements from the AAP expressing their shock.

But did Rahul Gandhi actually make such a statement?

If so why?

While Alka Lamba’s phone is off after senior leaders rebuffed her and distanced themselves from her statement the resentment against Kejriwal in DPCC is quite palpable.

According to sources the meeting of Delhi leaders at the AICC had been called by the party High Command where Rahul Gandhi wanted to hear their views about their preparations for 2024.

Adjustment of Lok Sabha seats with the AAP was not really on the agenda. According to Hari Shankar Gupta former MLA, the meeting was attended by all 35 invitees and every one was given a chance to speak for two three minutes.

He said that he even said at the meeting that if the issue of MCD or Assembly elections is on agenda “we might express our view on seat distribution but if the matter concerns Lok Sabha we would all accept the wishes of the High Command.’

Harun Yusuf former Minster also said that there was no discussion on alliances and Rahul Gandhi did not speak a word on this topic.

Among others who attended the meeting were Ajay Maken, Sandeep Dikshit, Anil Chaudhary (DPCC President),Harun Yusuf former Delhi Minister, Jai Kishan, Dr.Narendra Nath ex Minister, Ramakant Goswami ex Minister, Vijay Singh Lochav, Mangal Ram Singhal, Alka Lamba etc.

Interestingly, Sandeep Dikshit and Ajay Maken are old rivals in DPCC as the later holds Maken responsible for bringing about the downfall of Shiela Dikshit, their common thread is their hatred for Arvind Kejriwal.

Sandeep Dikshit continues to speak out against any alliance with the AAP even after the 26-party alliance worked out in Karnataka, although Ajay Maken is publicly quiet now.

But there is a silent feeling of distrust and keeping the APP at arms distance among the DPCC leaders as he snatched away their entire vote bank and could spell trouble before 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Anil Mittar, senior Congress leader, though no admirer of Alka Lamba is a hardliner as far as relations with AAP is concerned, said that alliance with AAP would be suicidal.

Political observers feel that statements like that made by Alka Lamba are part of the pressure tactics to keep AAP under pressure.

Talking to mediamap.co.in a senior leader said that ultimately the Congress would agree to divide the seven seats of Delhi as 5 (Congress) and 2 (AAP) because the Congress was at Number 2 in five seats and at Number 3 on two seats of West Delhi (Mahabal Mishra) and New Delhi (Ajay Maken).

Similarly, he reasoned that in Himachal Pradesh the BJP holds all four LS seats since 2019 but with the Assembly in the Congress pocket, this time the party should contest all four seats as the AAP was nowhere.

In Punjab, the AAP rules the state assembly, the Congress has seven MPs in Lok Sabha out of 12. This time the Congress might contest on 8 seats leaving out four to AAP.

In Haryana the Congress has only one seat currently out of 10 but they are confident that the BJP would be wiped out in 2024. The AAP has no presence and there is no question of them being accommodated, is the reasoning.
