As the prestigious elections to the 91 colleges affiliated to Delhi University Students Union are due on September 22 the National Students Union of India (Congress students wing) has, for the first time launched a 'women manifesto'.

DUSU elections are being held after a gap of three years as Corona in 2020 had held up this activity in DU which has given up several leaders who are making headlines at the national level.

Among the prominent leaders active in various fields at present are Ajay Maken, Vjay Goel, Pinky Anand (lawyer), Alka Lamba, Rajat Sharma, late Arun Jaitley, late Lalit Maken,Pankaj Vora (veteran journalist), Harcharan Josh, Subhash Gupta, Hari Shankar Gupta and several others.

DUSU elections are supposed to be indicators of the mood of the youth of Delhi.

Talking about Her Manifesto, Akshay Lakra the spokesperson of NSUI told Media Map

"We have issued a women manifesto for the first time keeping in mind that there are 6 exclusive women colleges in various parts of Delhi. However the NSUI has always been very conscious about the place of women in society. For one the NSUI has had Alka Lamba as the President of All India NSUI but as of now the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad has never had a woman as All India President."

He also mentioned that the NSUI had ensured sanitary pad vending machines in 32 colleges of DU since 2017.

Another important issue that has been added to this manifesto is having functional internal Complaints Committee in all colleges.

Akshay Lakra disclosed that this issue was first high-lighted by the NSUI in a case in Bharti College in 2018 when a student complained of harassment but there was no mechanism (Internal Complaints Committee) as mentioned in the UGC rules. We agitated for this and once we got the college gates closed. Since then the DU has a functional ICC in every college).

The DUSU candidates are

Hitesh Guliya (president)

Abhi Dahiya (Vice President)

Yashana Sharma (Secretary)

Shubham Chowdhary (Joint Secretary)

In 2019 the ABVP had captured three of the four posts but with Kanhaiya Kumar being made NSUI in charge at the AICC the parry is hopeful of making a comeback in Delhi University in a big way this time.

Among other promises in the NSUI manifesto are free passes in Metro, no increase in fees, hostel fir every applicant, 24x7 Library, a railway booking counter on campus, free Wifi and a placement cell.

In September the NSUI had scored an impressive victory in Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) in the AAP dominated state.

More than BJP the Delhi results could be yet another battle for show of strength between the AAP and the Congress when relations between the two parties are tending to fall apart despite the efforts of the INDIA leaders at the national level.
