INDIA has rattled and unnerved the BJP leaders. Modi is angry and furious and that is why is leading from the front to ridicule, deride and destroy the name that 26 opposition parties gave to their alliance. His frustration and anger is visible both in his words and body language.

Within days of the official launch of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) at Bengaluru, the unity of purpose and determination of the 26 parties to challenge the ruling NDA in the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament was abundantly evident when its no-confidence motion against the NDA government on the grim situation in Manipur where ethnic violence and crime against women have been continuing since May 3, was accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The opposition alliance, in full knowledge that its no-confidence motion has no chance to oust the NDA government on the floor of the house, succeeded in outwitting the ruling dispensation by taking recourse to this tool as it was the only way to keep focus on a national tragedy which has shocked the nation’s conscience beyond belief while the Modi government is deploying all tricks up its arms to keep crimes against humanity particularly against women away from popular focus following the time- tested maxim of ‘Human memory is short’.

At the same time, it was the only way to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intriguing silence forcing him to speak on the ethnic strife in the north eastern state that has resulted in over 200 killings, about thousand injuries, over 60000 people being displaced apart from loss of property.

Incidentally, Modi has spoken only once on the continuing tragedy in Manipur outside Parliament when he should have spoken first in Parliament in reverence to the long followed convention but then he cares two hoots about traditions, rules or conventions. Arrogance of parliamentary numbers and a conviction that opposition can’t make a dent in his popular image, the Prime Minister has been ignoring the human tragedy particularly crimes against women in Manipur by diverting attention and comparing the situation in the north eastern state with the opposition ruled states. In fact, he has been insulting the intelligence of common men and women.

While there is disagreement or divergence of views among the non-INDIA opposition parties like the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMM) whose leader Asaduddin Owaisi has questioned the opposition alliance’s strategy to stick to protest resulting in passing of several bills without any debate despite the no-confidence motion being accepted , fact is that it is the arrogance and tactics of the treasury benches to delay any discussion on the Manipur situation so that tragedy slowly slips out of the people’s focus which is the main cause of the continuing protests inside the two houses.

Notwithstanding the deepening of trust and unity among the parties and their leaders in the opposition alliance by closer action and coordinated moves in Parliament, INDIA has indeed hit PM Modi hard wounding him.

INDIA has rattled and unnerved the BJP leaders. Modi is angry and furious and that is why is leading from the front to ridicule, deride and destroy the name that 26 opposition parties gave to their alliance. His frustration and anger is visible both in his words and body language.          .

Addressing BJP workers in poll-bound Rajasthan last week, the Prime Minister said that merely changing the opposition's name to INDIA, short for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, will not be enough to mislead people.

Modi has also cited examples of the East India Company and the Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) to say that just having India in an organisation's name does not mean it has the right intentions. He had used similar examples at a meeting of the BJP parliamentary party on July 25, while slamming the opposition as "directionless".

"They keep praising themselves for the name INDIA. Indian National Congress. East India Company. Indian Mujahideen. Popular Front of India - these are also INDIA. Just using the name INDIA does not mean anything," BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad had quoted the Prime Minister as saying in Tuesday's meeting.

During his address in Rajasthan, Modi said the opposition coalition had changed its name from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to INDIA to hide its past wrongdoings.

"They (opposition) changed their name from the UPA to INDIA to hide how they schemed against the poor. They have changed their name so that they can remove the stain of capitulating to terror. Their ways are similar to that of the country's enemy. The name INDIA is not to show their patriotism, but with an intention to rob the country," he said.

Unwittingly, Modi seems to have walked into the opposition trap as pointed out by TMC leader Derek O’Brien who attacked the Prime Minister for his jibes against the alliance’s name INDIA, saying we have the PM where we wanted him to be.

In a video posted on Twitter, O'Brien said the only response that the Prime Minister can give on the 26-party alliance's name is a negative one and that is just what the opposition wanted.

"Hello, Mr Prime Minister Narendra Modi. You are at it again? Attacking us with our new name INDIA, Jeetega Bharat. What's happened? The only response you can give is a negative one. You know, Mr Modi, we've got you just where we wanted you to be," the Rajya Sabha MP wrote in his tweet. .

"We wanted you to react. We wanted you to be negative, and you're doing just that. And we'll carry on, spreading the word INDIA," he added.

Having put the ruling BJP and its leaders on the back foot, INDIA made yet another intelligent move to send a 21 member delegation to the troubled state on July 29 to assess the situation there and meet the affected citizens.

Sending of the delegation hit the BJP hard provoking a sharp response from none other than Union Minister for Information who termed it as “just optics” and a “show off”. Thakur alleged that the opposition never spoke when Manipur used to burn in their rule.

“When this INDIA returns from Manipur, I want to ask Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury if he supports crime against women in his state West Bengal. Will these 20 MPs of INDIA give reports on Rajasthan and West Bengal as well”, asked Thakur.

From all accounts, opposition alliance, since its launch in Patna on June 23 and its naming in Bengaluru on July 19, is making its presence felt among people in general and among the ruling NDA camp in particular.
