The day of 27th July 2015 holds a special significance in Indian history. On this day India lost its great scientist and former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. On his death anniversary, we pay tribute to him by remembering his life, achievements and the contribution he made.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, to a fisherman's family. His father Jainulabdeen was a boatman and his mother Ashiamma was a housewife. After early education, he graduated in physics from St. Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli and then obtained a degree in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology.
Dr. Kalam started his career as a scientist in DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization). Later he joined ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and worked on many important projects there. Under his leadership, India developed the first indigenous satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III) and successfully put the 'Rohini satellite into space in 1980.
Dr. Kalam contributed significantly to making India self-reliant in missile technology. He played a key role in the development of Agni and Prithvi missiles, which earned him the nickname 'Missile Man of India'.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was sworn in as the 11th President of India on 25 July 2002. He was famous for his simple nature and public welfare works. During his tenure, he took many inspirational initiatives for the youth and encouraged education. During his tenure, the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan were opened to the general public and he earned the title of 'People's President'.
Dr Kalam was also a motivational speaker and author. His books such as 'Wings of Fire', 'India 2020', and 'Ignited Minds' inspired the youth and tried to bring positive change in their lives. He believed that the empowerment of youth is essential to make India a developed nation.
On 27th July 2015, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam died of an untimely cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong. His death left the entire nation in grief. Lakhs of people attended his funeral procession and bid him a final farewell.
Dr. Kalam's legacy is still alive. Inspired by his life, millions of youth are ready to make their dreams come true. His ideals and thoughts will always inspire us. His words 'Dreams are not what we see while sleeping, dreams are those that do not let us sleep' are still alive in the heart of every Indian.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was a great scientist, a beloved President and a unique inspiring personality. On his death anniversary, we pay tribute to him and pledge to follow the path shown by him. His memories and his ideals will always inspire us and give a new direction to our lives.
